Case Study: Automation in Chile’s Timber Industry

Thanks to automation, our customer's process time was reduced from 3 days to 16 hours.

Our customers in Chile come from the mining, timber and pulp industries, as well as the water management and fruit processing sectors. Eucasec manufactures parquet flooring in southern Chile, for example for “La Moneda”, the seat of the Chilean President.

The timber from eucasec comes from our own, sustainably managed forests that have been recognised by the UN. After harvesting, the tree trunks are pre-cut and initially stored. Before shipping, they must undergo heat treatment to prevent parasites.

The process was automated using a simple deZem solution: : within 30 minutes, a small automation station, a relay for controlling a hot-water pump, and three wireless temperature sensors (1x air, 2x timber) were installed and put into operation. Based on a maximum wood/air temperature difference and a three-hour holding time at 55 °C, the procedure was implemented according to the customer’s specifications and can be monitored online in detail. As a result, process quality was improved , and the process duration was reduced from three days to 16 hours - leading to increased production and reduced costs.

deZem now offers many other solutions for automation.Typical applications include load management or handling various control tasks using a cost-effective on-site automation station. This station is connected to the secure, central deZem data platform, enabling high-quality monitoring and flexible setpoint management — even from a mobile phone.

About deZem

Since 2003, deZem has been developing and supplying hardware and software to network and analyse sensor data from many heterogeneous sources - worldwide with projects in Europe, America and Asia. Originally started in the field of energy controlling, we have expanded our range of products and services over the years into a comprehensive system for IoT data management, from industrial analytics to plant and process monitoring to technical building management. Because the basic idea is the same: to create a scalable platform for collecting and analysing IoT data.
