The CO₂ emission of data centres worldwide is poised to match that of international air traffic. At the same time, an ever increasing percentage of the operating costs of data centres is due to energy - sometimes up to 50%.

A radical lowering of data centre energy consumption is therefore of great interest. In fact, low-cost measures can already have great effect. For example, one half of data centre energy is usually consumed by cooling. With an optimisation of the existing facilities and temperature profiles this proportion can be drastically reduced.
